Lucky escape for cabbie, passengers

Melbourne: A student taxi driver (Jaswinder Singh, 22, from Faridkot, Punjab) and two passengers are shaken but unhurt after fleeing from their car seconds before a train slammed into it in Melbourne’s north . Police say the taxi got stuck on an Oak Park level crossing in Devon Road, just before 11pm yesterday (12 October). Sergeant Luke Bristow says the trio escaped just before the train hit the car.

“Boom gates have come down. Realising the train was coming and a collision was imminent, with the aid of some witnesses, the taxi driver and the two occupants have been able to flee the vehicle before the collision has occurred between the taxi vehicle and the train,” he said. He says the driver got stuck on the crossing when he tried to do a U-turn.
