Sydney – Protesters staged an “unwelcoming ceremony” for US President George Bush ahead of his arrival in Sydney on Tuesday, threatening an escalating series of protests during his four-day visit.

About 100 demonstrators gathered in central Sydney, waving placards reading “Bush not welcome”, “Stop the war” and “Troops out now” as about 60 police looked on.

“We have organised this rally because we cannot sit on the sidelines while a warmonger like George Bush comes to this country,” said Alex Bainbridge from the Stop Bush Coalition protest group.

The protest ended peacefully after about an hour but Bainbridge said much larger rallies were planned, culminating in a demonstration on Saturday that organisers say could attract up to 20 000 people.
