Melbourne: 24-year-old Indian national Puneet Puneet was arrested (on 29 November) in Patalia, Punjab by police at the request of Australian authorities. After facing court in India Puneet Puneet was remanded in custody.
Puneet’s arrest is the result of close and continued cooperation between Victoria Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives and Australian and Indian authorities, says a Victoria Police media release.
Puneet was charged following a fatal collision in Southbank on 1 October, 2008 where 19-year-old Dean Hofstee was killed and 20-year-old Clancy Coker was seriously injured.
Puneet who was charged of culpable driving was given strict bail conditions and was forced to surrender his Indian passport – but he fled to India on June 12, 2009, before being sentenced, using friend Sukhcharanjit Singh’s passport.
It is now a matter for Indian authorities to determine whether Puneet should be extradited to Australia.
