Two Indian students have drowned after getting caught in a rip near Anglesea
in Victoria’s south-west this evening.(Dec.10, 2007)

The 19-year-old man and 22-year-old woman entered the water at Hutt Gully
just after 6:00pm AEDT.

Friends raised the alarm when the pair disappeared.
Paramedics were unable to to revive the man and police located the body of
the woman an hour-and-a-half later.

Sergeant Bill Matthews says the two were only in knee-deep water when they
were swept away.

“It’s very hard to understand how two people could drown when they were
standing at the edge of water and not out swimming,” he said.

Sergeant Matthews says the beach is not a safe place to swim.

is unpatrolled,” he said.

“We haven’t had any drownings here to my knowledge in the past, but it is a
little treacherous this area.”

Their families will be contacted in India.
