Celebrate India Diwali 2018 launch at the Australia India Institute

MELBOURNE, 30 OCTOBER: The Australia India Institute welcomed Celebrate India onto the University of Melbourne campus last night to launch the Victorian Diwali Festival for 2018.

Now in its 13th year, the five-day-long Festival includes a program of social and cultural events across Melbourne featuring Indian cinema, Bollywood dances and a delectable taste of Indian cuisine.

After the opening proceedings, Director Craig Jeffrey highlighted the leading role Victoria has taken in deepening ties with India and the impressive progress made towards fulfilling the goals set out in the Victoria India Strategy launched in January 2018.

Victorian Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos reflected on the vibrancy of the Indian diaspora in Victoria and highlighted the rich cultural and economic contributions the community has made to the state.

Minister Mikakos, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs Mrs. Inga Peulich, Melbourne University’s Assistant Deputy Vice-Chancellor International for India Muthupandian Ashokkumar, and Aii Director Craig Jeffrey then formally launched the Diwali Festival alongside Celebrate India Chairman Arun Sharma.

The Festival will culminate with a featured event on Saturday, November 3 at Federation Square.
