INDIA: Now the ‘Mother of All Scams’

NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (IPS) – As India is rocked by a series of billion-dollar scams, the question on
everybody’s mind is whether the perpetrators will go scot-free in what has been
described as a low-risk, high-gain activity in this country.

”Corruption has become a disease that is endemic and hard to eradicate,”
says N. Jayaprakash Narayan, a medical doctor and India’s best-known anti-
corruption crusader. “We urgently need corrective treatment rather than
political invective.”

Narayan’s reference was to fierce exchanges between representatives of the
Congress party and the main national opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
over which party was more responsible for breeding corruption, with neither
showing signs of being serious about curbing it. Read more

Commonwealth Games should not have gone to Delhi: Australia

Australia’s Olympic Committee president has said the Commonwealth Games should not have been awarded to Delhi.

John Coates said the Commonwealth Games Federation lacked the resources to monitor progress and to ensure that construction deadlines were met.

England have become the first overseas team to reach Delhi, but other nations have delayed their arrivals.

A New Zealand cyclist became the first member of his nation’s team to pull out because of health and safety fears.

Greg Henderson, who has won four medals at previous Games, cancelled on Friday, citing concerns over the state of facilities – a day after four British cyclists withdrew from the 3-14 October competition.

Delhi CWG: Weightlifting Hall ceiling crashes at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

New Delhi: Another incident has taken place on Wednesday morning to tarnish the already dented imgae of the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The false ceiling of the weightlifting hall gave way and came crashing. It was the same portion of the ceiling that was shaky when trials events were held at the hall last month. It was then pointed out to the authorities by media but they covered up the issue, saying it is a minor inicident. but today media is proved right. The weightlifting hall is situated in the main Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JNS) complex, the main stadium of the games.

Due to these developments, foreign teams have delayed their arrival in Delhi. England, New Zealand, Scotland have announced delayed arrival at the games starting on October 5.
