Melbourne: India and the Federaion of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) have expressed disappointment over Victorian Premier John Brumby’s decision to cancel his planned trip to Mumbai during his India visit begining today. The cancellation followed a travel advisory by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DAFT) which talked of a terrorist threat in Mumbai.
Indian Consul-General in Melbourne Anita Nayar said the Premier should have visited Mumbai to send a message that Australians were determined not to be frightened away, reports PTI.
“It would have been great if the premier could have sent that message but I understand that there are constraints,” she told reporters here.
“We would have liked him to visit Mumbai. (But) one can never predict what is going to happen. If he had gone and something happened, everybody would say why did you go?” she said.
Meanwhile, Gautam Gupta of the FISA told ABC: “Mr Brumby’s not going with anything concrete. He is not going in telling them that I have made it safer. He is only making assurances which he has already made in Victoria.”
“What else is going to go there? Is he going to go there and tell, “I can understand that as a parent, if you are sending your kids overseas, you are always in fear and I’m sorry if I can’t make it feel you but I am putting in a compensation package”. For example if a college closes, it is something that happens but he is not doing that. He is going in empty handed with a lot of assurances,” Mr. Gupta said.
