Melbourne: The Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) has welcomed the Rudd government’s International Student Strategy. The strategy envisaged at the recently held Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) meeting at Darwin on July 2, details a series of steps to address issues related to international students in Australia. The strategy comes in the wake of recent attacks on Indian overseas students in Melbourne and Sydney, which ignited diplomatic tension between India and Australia.
FISA spokesperson, Gautam Gupta while welcoming the government’s planned steps told South Asia Times on phone that organisations and groups who are already helping international students should be associated with the measures the Rudd government plans to take.
He further said: “The FISA is satisfied that Mr Kevin Rudd and his ministers are finally speaking the language of the students. FISA is looking forward to work with the Government across all levels to improve student experiences while they are in Australia.”
In a statement the FISA wants overseas students to be included in the planned delegation that is to visit India, fund bodies helping Indian students, specialist police division for international students, develop cultural understanding, clearer articulation between international education and migration policies, known student organisations such as NUS, CAPA and FISA are invited to be part of this initiative to be truly inclusive, include known student organisations such as NUS, CAPA and FISA to the planned International Student Roundtable to be held in Canberra on 14-15 September 2009.
The COAG meeting has decided a crackdown on crime around metropolitan transport hubs to improve student safety, improved pre- and post-arrival information, and engagement with ethnic and broader Australian community, enhance general educational offerings that develop cultural understanding, tolerance and language skills, improving quality of education providers, criminal charges against education providers for giving false information to students among others.
