The Senate hearing on Wednesday (2 September) was told that international students need to get public transport concessions to save from violent attacks.
The Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) told the inquiry in Sydney on Wednesday of frustrations over discrimination, racially motivated violence and a lack of integration programs, reports 9 News.
Later students and about 150 peers took their calls for a national concession card, greater equality and cultural tolerance to the steps of NSW Parliament after the hearing, the report says.
9 News quotes student campaigner Hardeep Kaur as urging the federal government to “wake up now”.
“Enough is enough … Take action now and make a difference. There is a huge industry at risk and many jobs and lives are at stake,” she told the rally. The inquiry into the welfare of Australia’s international students follows widespread concern over a string of violent attacks on Indian students in Sydney and Melbourne.
