Melbourne: Indian Foreign Minister S. M. Krishna today had a firsthand experience at Melbourne’s Sunshine station in the Western suburb, which was recently in news during attacks on Indian students. He was shown a mobile monitoring van outside the station which could monitor people entering and exiting the station. Screens inside the van could easily capture an incident or activity in the area.
Accompanied by Victoria Police personnel, Mr. Krishna also visited the station’s platform where a large number of people from different nationalities could be seen. Though there were many Indians around but only one ventured to talk to the Minister. To his surprise he was Chandra Prashant from Bangalore and belonged to the constituency from where he was once elected. A smiling Minister could not hide his happiness and talked to him in Kannada and English.
In front of the police personnel, Chandra Prashant told the Minister that his home in Sunshine was burgled three times in six months and the police did nothing much about it. An embarrassed police official was seen telling him how he could deal with the situation. Talking to South Asia Times later, Chandra Prasad said that he was very happy that he had met a good human being and former Chief Minister of Karnataka.
When South Asia Times asked Mr. Krishna as to what was his reaction after visiting the Sunshine railway station, Mr. Krishna said whatever steps the Victoria Police have taken would be taken by anyone in the situation.
Subsequently, Mr. S M Krishna met Indian student Shravan Kumar, who is yet to fully recover from a brutal attack by a group of teenagers in May, and enquired about his health from his father.
The 25-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh, one of the first victims of the racial strikes in Australia, was attacked by a screwdriver by ocal teenagers, who also assaulted his three Indian friends.
The Indian Foreign Minister is on a five-day visit to Australia.
