A view of the Delhi Times (TOI, Nov.5 2007) pages carrying the following story of Pakistan fast bowler
Shoaib at a New Delhi nightclub with a female friend (‘a high flier in Delhi’s party circle’).

Pakistani player Shoaib Akhtar tried dodging the camera a couple of times in a swank Delhi nightclub.

Pakistan’s cricket coach, Geoff Lawson, may be telling the world that Shoaib Akhtar has got a new hairdo and a new attitude that he is calm and focussed but there are a few habits that die hard. Like being a night bird and enjoying the company of women.

Shoaib proved it all over again on Friday night. We were not surprised to see Shoaib getting out of the elevator of Le Meridien, where the team is staying, at midnight. But what sure had us a little surprised was the stealthy way in which the Pakistani bowler was going about his business.

As we looked around, the answer was not difficult to find. Actually she was standing right there in a ganjee and jeans. Shoaib’s female friend, whom sources mention is a high-flier on Delhi’s party circle, was all smiles to see the cricketer. But as our shutterbug started clicking the pictures, Shoaib’s well-built bodyguard who is supposed to be his lawyer too was not amused. Seeing that the cricketer’s pictures were being clicked with the girl, he lunged towards the cameraman and asked him to stay off. He also threatened him with nasty consequences.

Shoaib, meanwhile, did a good job of ducking behind the girl to evade getting clicked. The couple then sat in a swanky car and headed towards Capitol at Ashok where DJ Aqeel was playing for the night. After having instructed the bouncers to keep cameras away from him, Shoaib cosied up to his ‘friend’. Sparks flew as the couple enjoyed some ‘private moments’. When we tried to click their pictures, we were blocked with, Pictures nahi, Shoaib bhai ne mana kiya hai. Even though Aqeel invited Shoaib to the DJ console, the cricketer having noticed the media’s presence decided to make a quick exit.

This time too, he ducked behind his ‘friend’ to ensure that he wasn’t clicked. As we again tried to take their pictures, the bodyguard-cum-lawyer now tried to snatch the camera and a fight ensued. Navneet Kalra, who, we found, owns the car which ferried the duo around town, termed the tryst as a quiet dinner amongst friends. Friends now, where have we heard that one before?
