Brisbane: Former Bundaberg surgeon Jayant Patel told a patient he needed to “whip out” his bowel, even though there was no sign of cancer, a court has been told.
Patel, 59, has pleaded not guilty to three manslaughter charges and one of grievous bodily harm.
“Ian Rodney Vowles now needs the use of a colostomy bag after the operation at Bundaberg Base Hospital in October 2004, the Supreme Court in Brisbane was told on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Ross Martin said a colonoscopy revealed polyps in Mr Vowles’ bowel were benign but that surgeon Patel still made the decision to remove the rest of Mr Vowles’ bowel, ” AAP reports.
Today was the second day of the trial.
