New Delhi: Australia has finally admitted the attacks against Indian students might have a racial angle but termed most of them as opportunistic crime. The admission came from Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Peter Varghese said race might have played a role in some of the violent attacks against Indian students that have threatened ties between the two countries.Earlier, India advised thousands of its citizens studying in Australia to take precautions against assault following the murder of 21 year old Nitin Garg in a Melbourne park where he was going to work.
ABC reports Mr Varghese said Australia has never denied there being a racial element to any of the attacks. He called the majority of assaults involving Indian nationals “opportunistic urban crime.”But he added there have been some cases where the motivation appeared to be racial, particularly where the attackers engaged in racial abuse.
Meanwhile, the police investigation in the murder is in full swing but no one has been charged. ABC Breakfast News today (7 January, 2010) has revealed that someone took a taxi from just outside the park near a newsagency at about 9.40 pm. might have some information. The fatal killing is suspected to have taken place around 9.30 pm on 5 January.
