NEW DELHI: Victorian Premier John Brumby, who is on a visit to India, on Thursday said he regretted attacks on Indians in the state. He admitted that such incidents had affected Victoria’s image. Australia’s new envoy Peter Varghese, who assumed office on the same day, too said the attacks had hurt the Australia brand in India.

Times of India reports Mr. Brumby as saying: “Melbourne is one of the safest cities anywhere in the world. We have regrettably had a small number of incidents, crimes which have been racially-based. I am absolutely clear as premier that any crime, particularly any racially-based crime, is completely unacceptable to me, and to the state and to our government.”

Earlier, Brumby played cricket at the capital’s St. Stephens College after addressing the students promoting Victoria as a safe destination for Indian students and flaying racist attacks on students in Victoria. He also assured the gathering no such attacks will be tolerated.

Brumby will today announce a new round of scholarships specifically for Indian students, reports Sky News.
