Media Release
The South Asian Journalists Association of Australia Inc. (SAJAA) has condemned the sentencing of four Mid Day journalists to four months imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on contempt of court charges for publishing reports against former Chief Justice of India Mr. Y. K. Sabharwal. We urge the Delhi High Court to immediately withdraw its order.
The SAJAA is of the view that in a democratic society journalists have a duty to highlight issues of corruption in high places. This is in public interest and people on top positions in the judiciary cannot be above the law. They also cannot claim immunity from media scrutiny.
Only an independent inquiry into the matter can prove whether the journalists’ allegations against the former CJI of India are right or wrong. No contempt charges can be pursued unless allegations against him are found to be wrong. The SAJAA is fully with any movement to support these journalists and other media issues raised by journalists and their organizations in India.
Sitting far away from India our hearts and solidarity are with our media colleagues who are facing the wrath of the judiciary for exposing corruption in a place, which is supposed to dispense justice. We are sure the cause of freedom of press will win and brave media persons (like the ones in Mid Day) will continue to raise issues of public concern including corruption in high places.
