Melbourne: The Indian students in Australia has asked the Shiv Sena to withdraw its plan to stop Aussie players from playing in Mumbai during IPL matches.

In a letter to Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thakeray, Gautam Gupta of the Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) says: “It is the Indian student’s strong desire that there should be no violence or protests against Australian cricketers and instead the Australian Cricketers should be invited to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Indian students and become FAIR GO Ambassadors for all Indians especially when they return to Australia.”

Earlier, the Shiv Sena had announced not to let Aussie players play in IPL matches protesting against attacks on Indian students in Australia.

Melbourne, Feb 7: Victoria’s Police Commissioner Simon Overland has been slammed by Indians for advising Indian students living in Australia that they should not work as taxi drivers and should look as poor as you can to avoid being assaulted. The comments were made by the top cop at an international students safety forum attended by about 150 people in the city on Saturday.
However, Federation of Indian Students of Australia spokesperson Gautam Gupta blasted the advice, saying that Indians should not have to look poor to feel safe. What is he saying’ Indians don’t have the right to be rich’ and if they look rich, do they maybe have to get bashed’ on one hand, everyone should look poor. On the other, don’t live in poor areas. I don’t understand, The Age quoted Gupta, as saying.
He further said that taxi drivers had a right to feel safe no matter what their nationality is. Its a workplace. Every workplace should be safe. I think it’s a ridiculous idea. It is blaming the worker. It is blaming the victim, Gupta said.

The Victorian government has enlisted the support of Australian all-time spin bowler Shane Warne to turn the country’s sagging reputation around and help soothe anger in India by doing some promotional work.Warne met with Premier John Brumby in this regard behind closed doors Friday but the leg-spinner refused to speak to the media on the outcome of the talks.Brumby repeated the possibility of a “friendship cricket game” and did not rule out a taxpayer-funded ad campaign to contain the fallout over continuing attacks on Indians.
The Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) spokesman Gautam Gupta said Warne was a good ambassador and his work should be focused on tackling racism locally, rather than promoting Australia overseas.

“He’s got a lot of young followers and he sends the right message,” Gupta added.
