105 Indians in Australian jails, Indian Parliament told

NEW DELHI, 29 December 2022: The Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha) was informed by the Mr. V. Murlaeedharan, India’s Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) that there are 105 Indians in jails across Australia. Of these 40 are under-trials (39-male and 1-female) and 65 are convicts (59-male and one-female, 5-sex not available). The Minister was answering on 16 December 2022 to a unstarred question No. 1700 by Mr. Arvind Dharamapuri MP.

In his reply the alleged offences for under-trials and those convicted are stated as being family violence, attempt to murder, cheating, road accidents, rape, racial violence, violence etc. The Minister said, ” The information available with the Ministry in respect of Indian under-trials and Indian convicts in prisons in foreign countries is placed at Annexure-I and Annexure-II respectively. However, due to strong privacy laws prevailing in many countries, the local authorities do not share information on prisoners unless the person concerned consents to the disclosure of such information.”

The Minister also gave the numbers of under-trials and convicts in other countries. (Annexure-I and Annexure-II respectively).
