MELBOURNE, 4 April 2022: The Australia-India free trade agreement signed on 2nd April 2022 virtually between Trade Minister Dan Tehan and Minister Piyush Goyal, is likely to come into force around mid-2022. This was disclosed by Dan Tehan answering to a question by South Asia Times (SAT) at a media briefing today about the implementation time frame of the agreement. The Australian Minister said it could take 3 to 4 months to fix all details and respective legislation of the agreement in both the countries.

Answering to another question by South Asia Times (SAT) if he was disappointed at the exclusion of Australian dairy and some other products in the agreement, Mr. Tan Tehan said, he would have liked to have an agreement on all products, but India has a vast agriculture sector and great effort was made to get the outcomes.

“This agreement covers 90 percent of the trade between the two countries and the interim agreement actually is much more than an interim agreement. This is a very comprehensive agreement,” he said.

The Australian Minister also detailed the backpacker type working visas for young Indians for the hospitality, farms, cafes, resort islands among others saying the details
for the same are being worked out.

Indian yoga instructors and chefs will be under the skilled migrant category, Mr. Tehan said at the news briefing.
