Bangladeshi CDU student dies in Darwin home invasion assault

DARVIN, NT, 5 May 2023: A 23-year-old international student from Bangladesh, Md Ishaqur Rahman Sifat died in the Royal Darwin Hospital as a result of injuries sustained after an assault during a home invasion on 3 May 2023. Sifat was a student of Masters in Information Services. Major Crime detectives are now investigating the homicide. A 29-year-old man remains in custody and police investigations are continuing.
A NT Police media release update (Detectives from Serious Crime have now charged the alleged offender with: Murder,  Aggravated burglary and Theft. Theft. He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Monday 8 May 2023. “
Statement by the CDU
At 4:25am, police received reports that an unknown man had unlawfully entered a residence on Trower Road. He allegedly assaulted a 23-year-old male resident, causing significant injuries to the victim before fleeing the scene.
The victim was admitted to the Royal Darwin Hospital’s ICU and remained in a critical condition. He later did not survive.
The Bangladesh Students Association at the Charles Darwin University in a Facebook post says, ” It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved friend and fellow student, MD Ishaqur Rahman (Sifat).
After being heavily assaulted by an intruder while sleeping, he fought bravely in the ICU but sadly succumbed to his injuries at 4:35 PM today. Our whole community is shaken by this tragic loss.
May his soul find eternal peace in the presence of Allah. Let us come together in love and support for his family and friends during this time of grief.”
