Budget to relieve high cost of living & invest on frontline services: Premier

The Premier Of Victoria, Hon. Jacinta Allan MP, on 26 May, 2025, gave a briefing to multicultural media outlets on the recent machete ban through an interim order and the state’s budget for 2025-26, at the the 1, Treasury Place, Melbourne. The machete ban was to take effect from September 2025,  but takes effect from 28 May, 2025, as an Interim sale ban in the aftermath of the violent shopping centre brawl and public outcry over the incident. The Premier said “public safety comes first” explaining the immediate interim machete ban.

In the brief but exhaustive budget 2025-26 brief, she detailed the main features of the state government’s effort to water down the cost of living crisis and point by point different measures planned in that direction. The proposed free public transport for under 18s, she said was to support parents, where every dollar counts. Plus, weekend free public transport for seniors across Victoria, free pharmacy care, energy bill help, $ 100 power saving bonus etc.

Answering to a question on the viability of new strict bail laws by South Asia Times (SAT), the Premier said, the frequency and seriousness of the crimes by offenders we needed an intervention to break that cycle which the tough new bail laws are all about. They are working and people on remand/jail has increased…” (20:54- 23:55)

The Premier also answered questions about hate crimes, primary school upgrading, new businesses, Victoria Police, and Guru Nanak Lake naming issue.
