Premier Jacinta Allan says, “This could save families up to $300 per year off their energy bills – more if they have solar and batteries.”
“It’s another reason why working from home can save you time and money.”
A media release from the Victorian Premier’s office says: “This will benefit households who can shift their electricity use to the middle of the day. That includes people who work from home. And the overall benefit to Victoria is reduced peak demand, which is good for reliability and security. Under the plan, retailers will be required to offer a discounted tariff to households during the day.
About 2.6 million Victorian households will be eligible for the Midday Power Saver offer and can opt into the program with their energy provider.
More details, including the time periods and prices for the offer across the state, will be released in May.
Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio
“Whether you work from home or have smart appliances, the Midday Power Saver will save Victorians money.”
“Liberals will block renewable energy and send power bills up.”The media release adds: “This is only possible thanks to Victoria’s investment in renewable power, because we produce more electricity than we need during the day. More than 850,000 Victorians already generate solar power and enjoy cheap or free electricity during the day. Labor’s Midday Power Saver shares the benefits to give even more Victorians cheaper power.
Welcoming the plan, Environment Victoria said, “This means that households that have been locked out of solar like renters and apartment dwellers can share more of the benefits of the renewable energy boom. The more that the government does to make sure everyone can get off gas and make the most of these free three hours, the better.”
“Victoria already has the cheapest wholesale power on the east coast as we rapidly shift to renewable energy backed by storage. With gas prices set to skyrocket, this new announcement ups the savings already available from shifting to efficient electric appliances at home.”
