Perth girl, 9, shot dead by police in Pakistan

A nine-year-old Australian girl from Perth was fatally shot by police in Pakistan after officers allegedly mistook her family’s rental car for that of armed robbers, according to local and Australian media reports. Her father and brother were injured in the incident, and Australian authorities have confirmed they are providing consular assistance.

Hania Ahmed, 9, was visiting relatives in Chakwal, Punjab province, when the shooting occurred. Local reports say a robbery involving two armed men on a motorcycle had taken place nearby, and police later opened fire on the family’s vehicle as it drove away. Hania was taken to hospital but pronounced dead, while her father, Adeel Ahmed, and brother, Aafan, were injured. Her mother, Dr. Sidra Khan, was not hurt.

Police in Pakistan are reportedly investigating the incident. Local officials have said those responsible will face consequences, though no official statement has been released detailing broader government action. Australian authorities have been contacting the family and coordinating support.

The killing has sparked mourning across Perth’s Pakistani community, with residents describing Hania as a “beloved child” and calling for justice.

Australian media describe the shooting as a tragic case of mistaken identity, while Pakistani reports focus on the chaotic response to a separate robbery that turned lethal.

Hania’s death marks one of the most serious incidents involving an Australian citizen in Pakistan in recent years, and it is likely to remain a sensitive diplomatic issue.

As of Sunday evening, there were no further details on arrests or charges. Authorities in both countries are expected to continue cooperating on the case.
