CANBERRA, 5 September, 2025: India’s High Commissioner (HC) to Australia, H.E. Mr. Gopal Baglay met with a delegation from the University of Wollongong (UOW) at the Indian High Commission, Canberra today. The delegation comprised of Prof G Q Max Lu AO, Vice Chancellor University of Wollongong (UOW), Mr. Canio Fierravanti, Director, Government and Community Relations and Australian Cricket legend & UOW Global Brand Ambassador Mr. Adam Gilchrist.
The Vice Chancellor updated the HC on the expanding footprint of the University in India, its academic activities and its future plans. The visiting delegation highlighted that Material sciences, Renewable Energy, AI, Nursing and Early Childhood education are some of the key focus areas for research cooperation.
The HC underlined the pivotal role of education as a bulwark of ties with Australia. He stated that knowledge partnerships not only foster innovation and skills but also deepen the people-to-people connect that underpins the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He appreciated the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership in advancing this vision and commended UOW for its pioneering step in establishing a presence in India.
The UOW became the second foreign university to establish a campus in India, with the launch of its campus at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in 2024.
