MELBOURNE, 20 September 2026: Liberal-Nationals to build 3 new select-entry high schools in VictoriaA Jess Wilson-led Liberal and Nationals Government will build three new select-entry high schools and convert six existing government schools, in the biggest expansion of Victoria’s academic schools in decades.
The plan, part of the Excellence in Education Plan, aims to give more high-achieving students access to selective schooling, regardless of postcode.
Victoria currently has just 4 fully selective government secondary schools.
By comparison, NSW has 21 fully selective and 26 partially selective schools.
The three new schools will be built in areas of high demand and open before 2030. Sites are targeted for:
West: Melton, Caroline Springs, Sydenham
North: Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park
South-East: Langwarrin, Cranbourne South
The six existing schools to transition will be chosen in consultation with communities and based on data.Entry will follow the current select-entry model and will not be based on wealth or postcode. The Opposition says entry will weigh academic performance, aptitude and socio-economic background equally to ensure fair access.
Leader Jess Wilson said too many students miss out each year due to limited places. Shadow Education Minister Brad Rowswell said the plan will strengthen Victoria’s state education system and give parents more choice.
