PM Modi meets PM Albanese in Melbourne as defence, trade and tech cooperation top the agenda; large diaspora reception planned at Marvel Stadium amid security steps.

MELBOURNE, 8 July, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his visit to Indonesia will arrive  here for a three‑day visit that includes bilateral talks with Anthony Albanese, a high‑profile diaspora reception at Marvel Stadium on July 9, and business and defence engagement. Australian authorities are probing any security issue, and critics of Modi’s domestic policies have signalled dissent, although police say there is no active public threat.

Pradeep Taneja, senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne, told PTI and quoted by indiatoday.in said, “Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to visit Australia three times, which in itself is quite unique and significant. It emphasises the importance both countries attach to their bilateral relations.” Modi’s previous official visits to Australia were in 2014 and 2023.

Taneja said he expected India and Australia to update their security cooperation framework. “It is expected that the 2009 Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation might be updated, introducing new security pillars to the bilateral security cooperation framework,” he said. The 2009 agreement had formally designated the relationship as a strategic partnership, which was upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020.

Taneja also said, “It is important that Australia, India and Japan keep the Quad alive through bilateral and trilateral cooperation among themselves, for the pressure from China that the Quad member countries face is unlikely to abate any time soon.” The Quad is an informal grouping of India, Australia, Japan and the United States that is committed to supporting an open, free and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

Main takeaways:

Visit overview
During his third visit to Australia as Prime Minister,  Narendra Modi will remain in Melbourne from July 8–10 to take part in the Australia–India Annual Leaders’ Summit and related events. The program includes formal talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, meetings with business leaders and a community reception organised as “Melbourne Meets Modi.” Government sources say trade, defence, technology, investment and Indo‑Pacific cooperation could dominate the agenda.

Key meetings and agenda priorities
Officials expect discussions to centre on boosting bilateral trade and investment, deeper defence and security cooperation, technology and critical‑minerals partnerships, and greater people‑to‑people ties, including education and diaspora engagement. A CEOs forum and outreach to state and industry stakeholders are scheduled alongside the leaders’ sessions.

Diaspora event: scale and optics
The Indian Diaspora reception at Marvel Stadium is heavily promoted online and reported as near‑capacity. The event organised by the Australia India Foundation is being used to showcase his support within the Indian Diaspora, with cultural segments and speeches planned to highlight bilateral links.

Security and protest context
Australian Federal Police said there is no current or imminent public threat. At the same time, groups critical of Modi’s record — particularly on civil liberties and minority rights — have publicly voiced opposition, and small protest actions or pickets may occur near venues. Police presence and security screening are expected to be significant at public events.

Political and media reaction
The visit is framed by proponents as a deepening strategic partnership with practical benefits for trade and regional security. Opponents, including some diaspora activists and political groups, characterise parts of the trip as political theatre and have urged scrutiny of human‑rights and governance concerns. Australian and Indian media are emphasising both the diplomatic stakes and the community dimension of the visit.
