MELBOURNE, 29 March 2026: In a bid to give relief to households facing surge in energy prices, the Victorian government today announced one month of free public transport (PT) starting Thursday 31 March 2026. The temporary step as a consequence of the war in the Middle East pushing up fuel prices will end on 30 April 2026. Public transport is free for children under 18, saving families up to $755, per child, per year, with a youth Myki.
The one month free transport is likely to cost $71m in forgone revenue, The Guardian reports. Tasmania also will have free public transport but will be up to July 2026.
Petrol prices in Melbourne today were around $2.49 per litre and Australia-wide the price was average $2.59 per litre, according to the Australian Institute of Petroleum.
A media release from the Premier’s office explains why the step has been taken:
” Free PT for a month eases pressure at the pump. It will make it more affordable for people to choose public transport. And it helps those who have to drive by getting more cars off the road. This won’t solve every problem, but it is an immediate step to help Victorians right now.

How it works
During the free period, passengers won’t have to touch on with their myki – all myki gates will be open. Machines won’t charge if you accidentally touch on. Myki pass holders can contact the call centre at 1800 800 007 to pause their pass for a month, or get a refund.
While people travelling on V/Line coaches outside the myki network will need to book a free ticket to secure their seat, you will not need a ticket to travel on trains outside the myki network.
We expect trains, trams and buses to get busier – but we are better able to meet that demand because Labor has expanded our transport network and added thousands of extra services.”
Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams says, “Fuel prices are rising and Victorian families are feeling it – free public transport will make a real difference for all.”
