Vandalism Targets Swaminarayan Temple and Local Asian Restaurants

MELBOURNE, 24 July 2025: The Swaminarayan Temple, Baronia, and two Asian restaurants (Thai and Chinese) were defaced with racial slurs on July 21, reports The Age. The report says the restaurants and the temple were  painted with the slogan ‘Go Home’ and offensive language. Racist graffiti was also painted on a healing centre on Mountain Highway. The incidents seem to be linked, reports indicate. The Victoria Police are investigating the incidents.

In a message to the temple the Premier Jacinta Allan has said ” What happened this week was hateful, racist and deeply disturbing. It wasn’t just vandalism – it was a deliberate act of hate, designed to intimidate, isolate, and spread fear.

It was an attack on your right to feel safe and to belong, and on the values that bind us together. There’s no place for it anywhere in Victoria. And it must be called out for what it is.”

The Premier’s office statement says, “Soon, the Minister for Multicultural Affairs will visit the Shree Swaminarayan Temple to offer the support of our Government, and to listen to you and your community directly.

No community should ever have to endure something like this, but in speaking out, you’ve shown an enormous amount of strength and dignity.”

The report will be updated as and when necessary.
