MELBOURNE, 14 March 2026: From Monday (16 March 2026), Victorians will be able to tap and go on public transport for the first time on four train lines to test tap-and-go technology. So, at these four lines Myki pass will not be needed, instead commuters can simply tap on and tap off with a Mastercard or Visa credit or debit card, smartphone or smartwatch.

Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams, “This public trial will ensure we have full confidence in the technology before it’s rolled out across the entire network.”

“Tap and go technology will make it quicker and easier for passengers to travel.”

Passengers travelling on the Craigieburn, Upfield, Ballarat and Seymour train lines will be the first to test the technology. It will only be available to passengers travelling on a full fare. This is on an experimental basis and will soon be expanded to other lines.

Specific readers and gates used for the trial will be decorated, so passengers know which readers accept tap and go. The tap and go technology will only be activated on the trial lines including stations in the City Loop.

Passengers planning to transfer to another train line, tram or bus must use a myki from the start of their journey. This will ensure they are not overcharged. People travelling on concession fares must keep using myki but will have the opportunity to participate in later stages of the rollout.

Participating in the trial is optional and will provide passengers the opportunity to test the new system through March and April. Station staff will be on hand to guide passengers and help them through the process.

Once the trials are successfully completed, tap and go payments will be switched on across the rest of the rail network that uses myki before being rolled out on buses and trams.

More information about the public transport ticketing upgrade is available at transport.vic.gov.au/news-and-resources/campaigns/more-ways-to-tap-and-go.
