Vic election candidates visit Blackburn Sikh temple

MELBOURNE, 6 November 2022: The Victorian election campaign today reached the Sikh temple in Blackburn, South-Eastern suburbs with one Labor and two Greens candidates addressing the Sunday congregation and later having ‘langar’ (community food eating) with the community. The candidates introduced themselves and detailed some of their party policies.

Mannie Kumar Verma, herself a Sikh, is the Labor candidate for Rowville. She is a lawyer and has been helping many victims of domestic violence. Mannie is running because she believes in leadership that speaks for all of us, leadership that brings people together.

Leadership that unites people and gives people a voice. Addressing those gathered at the Gurudwara she said:

The congregation then was addressed by Mr. Deepak Joshi, Greens candidate for Warrandyte. Mr. Joshi is an activist and part of The Humanism Project (THP) and the Hindus for Human Rights (HFHR). He is passionate about multiculturalism, diversity, and human rights.

Greens candidate for Box Hill, Joanne Shan is a second-generation Tamil, Sinhalese, and Burgher woman and says will push for a more open, transparent, and accountable government. We will pursue climate justice and First Nations justice, by getting Treaty done. We will address the cost-of-living crisis, the problems in local health and transport infrastructure, and the lack of affordable housing.
