Western Sydney University to open campus in UP

MELBOURNE, 9 January 2025: Australia’s Western Sydney University (WSU) has announced its intention to submit an application to the Universities Grant Commission (UGC) to establish a state-of-the-art campus in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. WSU will be the third university to set up a campus in India.

The University’s acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Sweeney recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh from the Uttar Pradesh Government (GoUP), in the presence of esteemed GoUP officials.

Subject to the relevant regulatory approvals, WSU intends to be the first foreign university in UP.

Professor Sweeney said the MOU is an important milestone for the University as it continues with its planning to establish a presence in India.

“We are pleased to sign this agreement heralding the next chapter for the University and its transnational education programs,” said Professor Sweeney.

“We are deeply committed to expanding our presence in India and passionate about taking Western Sydney to the world. We are preparing our application for this stand-alone campus, which will be focussed on creating impactful solutions for sustainable agriculture and food security, with teaching, research and technological innovations specifically tailored for India’s agritech, technology and other allied industries.”

The University aims  to include in the submission programs in computer science, business and engineering to ensure a comprehensive offering that will serve the needs of the Uttar Pradesh region and India more broadly, says a university media release.

Negotiations are currently taking place to potentially locate the campus in the Greater Noida Authority Building, planning to commence program delivery in 2026 once the necessary approvals are received.

The India presence builds on WSU’s long-established partnership with UEH University in Vietnam, as well and its campus in Surabaya Indonesia, which opened in late 2024.

Professor Sweeney said the University’s planned expansion to India is a major strategic commitment which strengthens its position as a global education leader.

“Western Sydney University has a proud history of opening up access to higher education. A presence in India will allow us to create life-changing opportunities for the next generation of local leaders that can support India’s economic transformation,” said Professor Sweeney.

“Importantly, as the University ranked number one in the world for social, ecological and economic impact for three years in a row in the Times Higher Education Impact rankings, we will ensure our long-standing commitment to sustainability and working with local communities to create a more inclusive and resilient future is embedded across all our campus’ operations.”
