Melbourne: Recent figures on 2011/2012 visa grants have signalled a re-emergence of India as a key market for higher education, The Australian reports.
Offshore grants of higher education visas from India increased by 71 per cent to 3994 in the year, with the only decline recorded in the June quarter.
The trend was expected to continue, with Austrade’s international education group manager Quentin Stevenson-Perks suggesting Indian student numbers could reach 25,000 to 30,000, reports the BusinessSpectator.
“Based on the demography, the economics, the opportunities in India, the opportunities here – I can’t see any reason why not,” he said.
Mr Stevenson-Perks comments were in line with those from the director of the Australia India Institute, Amitabh Mattoo.
“In the next 10 years, there will be 500 million Indians under the age of 25, but there are still less than 500 universities,” he said.
