MELBOURNE, 1 April 2026 : In a major development to the crisis in the Wyndham Council, all Councillors have signed a letter calling for Mayor Preet Singh to resign. Earlier, in the day Mayor Preet Singh had announced he was step aside from his mayoral duties, but has refused to say for how long. Under the law Mayor Preet Singh cannot be removed as he is elected for one year.
Speaking exclusively to Star Weekly on Wednesday morning 1 April, the embattled Cr Singh said he asked deputy mayor Jasmine Hill to take over mayoral duties from 2 April while he considers his position.
Mayor Preet Singh has been under pressure to quit Mayorship since it was revealed he had given a character reference for a paedophile in 2024, before he was elected to council. The local Werribee MP also raised the  Wyndham Mayor’s issue with Local Govt Minister by writing a letter to him. And, a protest rally demanding his resignation  is planned today at 5 pm.
The letter by Wyndham Councillors demanding Mayor Preet Singh’s resignation:
Date: 1 April 2026

We, the Councillors of Wyndham City Council have united to call for the Mayor to resign to restore stability to the Council and the Wyndham Community. On Monday we became aware that Cr Singh had provided a character reference for a convicted child sex offender. Since that time, we have been working behind the scenes to urge Cr Singh to step down. We can no longer remain silent.Supporting child sex offenders is never acceptable in any form. The Wyndham community deserves a Mayor they can feel confidence in. In an election year this is even more true as we ramp up our advocacy to secure funding for crucial projects. We firmly believe that following Monday’s revelations and the Mayor’s refusal to resign, he is no longer fit to hold the Office of Mayor and will be unable to adequately perform the duties of the role.Only a resignation will give us the opportunity to restore stability and get on with the job of delivering services and infrastructure for Wyndham.Under the Local Government Act 2020, Council is unable to remove a Mayor who has been elected for a term of one year.Signed by:

  • Cr Jasmine Hill, Deputy Mayor – Featherbrook Ward
  • Cr Peter Maynard – Quandong Ward
  • Cr Mia Shaw – Werribee Park Ward

  • Cr Shannon McGuire – Grange Ward
