MELBOURNE, July 4, 2026: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 8 to 11, with Melbourne as the main Australian stop and the third India-Australia Annual Summit as its centrepiece.
The visit begins in Indonesia on July 8 and 9, then moves to Australia on July 10, before ending in New Zealand on July 11. The broader diplomatic framing is India’s push to deepen ties in the eastern Indian Ocean and the wider Indo-Pacific under its “Act East” engagement. The New Zealand leg is especially notable because it is being described as the first visit by an Indian prime minister there in 40 years.

What happens in Melbourne
Melbourne will host Modi on July 10 for the third India-Australia Annual Summit. According to the MEA briefing, the summit discussions are expected to cover defence, foreign policy and trade, along with newer areas such as critical minerals, cybersecurity, supply chain resilience and emerging technologies. He is also expected to meet leaders from top Australian companies and visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
In a media release on 4 July, 2026, PM Anthony Albanese says, ” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will welcome the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, to Australia from 8 to 10 July 2026. The leaders will meet in Melbourne for the Australia–India Annual Leaders’ Summit.
“As the world’s fourth largest and fastest growing economy, India is a critical economic partner for Australia. Our relationship is underpinned by our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and supported by deep economic and cultural connections.”
“Our cooperation on trade, defence and security, and technology is delivering benefits for both countries, ” he said.
The Melbourne stop is being treated as the key Australian leg because the annual summit is an institutional dialogue under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership launched in 2020. That makes the visit both symbolic and practical. it is meant to push cooperation in strategic sectors while also connecting with business and the Indian diaspora in Australia.
Australia is one of India’s largest trading partners, and the Indian-born community there is large, which adds political weight to the visit.
PM Modi in Indonesia & New Zealand
In Indonesia, PM Modi is expected to hold talks in Jakarta and visit Yogyakarta and the Prambanan Temple complex, where conservation collaboration is planned. In New Zealand, he will meet Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, following momentum from Luxon’s India visit in 2025 and the recent signing of the India-New Zealand FTA.
That FTA was signed on April 27, 2026, and is reported to remove duties on 100% of Indian exports to New Zealand while securing a US$20 billion investment commitment from New Zealand over 15 years.
