MELBOURNE, 4 January 2021: Residents from five aged care facilities channeled their inner artist during the lockdown, with art packs gifted to the centers as part of the City of Greater Dandenong’s 9 by 5 Exhibition.

Mayor Angela Long said the packs included videos of art workshops and nine by five-inch boards for residents to create their own artwork.

“We were thrilled to be able to bring our exhibition to residents in aged care. Feedback received from the services indicated the gesture put a bit of a spark in the lives of residents who hadn’t been able to go out and have visitors,” Cr Long said.

The Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre’s 9 by 5 Exhibition has become a nationally recognized art event. With over 270 artworks being displayed on the gallery wall, this open-entry exhibition celebrates diversity within the arts community.

Artists from around Australia present their creativity on nine by five-inch panels in a wide variety of styles. This long-standing exhibition, celebrating its 15th year, commemorates the original 9 by 5 Exhibition held in Melbourne in 1889 which featured Tom Roberts, Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton, and Frederick McCubbin, where artists produced uniform artwork on nine by five-inch cigar box lids.

Artwork created by the aged care residents in 2020 is on display, with the public now able to attend the gallery following the easing of restrictions.

“What is so special about this exhibition is that many people who just like to make art but wouldn’t necessarily call themselves artists can participate. We have young kids and people who have never exhibited work in a gallery who participate. We are proud to share these innovative works with you and excited to welcome you back to the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre,” Cr Long said.

Attendees will be able to vote for their favourite piece as part of the People’s Choice Award, providing the winners with an art pack and free ticket to an Arts in Greater Dandenong workshop of their choice in 2021.

The 9 by 5 Exhibition will be on display until Saturday 23 January 2021. Opening hours are Tuesdays to Fridays, 12pm to 3pm and all COVID-safe practices apply.

All exhibited works will be available for sale to support artists.
