TOWNSVILLE (Queensland), October 5: The Wulguru Community Centre here came alive with colours, music, and festivities as the local Telugu community celebrated ‘Bathukamma’ with grandeur. The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of Telangana and brought together not just Telugu families but also members from diverse communities across Townsville.

A Celebration of Tradition

‘Bathukamma’, a floral festival revered in Telangana, was celebrated with full enthusiasm, symbolizing devotion to Goddess Gauri. The women of Townsville’s Telugu community welcomed ‘Bathukamma’ with traditional ‘Harati, beautifully arranged floral stacks, and engaging folk songs. They gathered in a circle, singing and dancing, enjoying the spirit of togetherness.

What stood out was the participation of women from various communities, making it a truly multicultural event. Traditional attire adorned the participants, and watching the women play ‘Bathukamma’ with joy and energy was a heartwarming sight.

Traditional Food and Community Unity

A key highlight of the event was the traditional food, lovingly prepared by the ladies of the Telugu community. Dishes like ‘Pulihora’ and ‘Biryani’ were served, offering a taste of home to many, and allowing other communities to experience the flavours of Telugu culture. Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous feast, which was not just a meal but a celebration of sharing and community spirit.

Children, dressed in vibrant traditional clothing, added to the festive atmosphere, as did the joyful participation of grandparents, parents, and kids alike. Many grandparents expressed deep gratitude to the organisers for arranging such a heartfelt celebration that made them feel right at home.

A Sense of Home Away from Home

The celebration ended with the traditional immersion of the floral stacks into water, accompanied by devotional songs. As the ‘Bathukamma’ was carried away, participants shared ‘Prasadam and concluded the evening with a delightful community dinner.

Several attendees, especially the elderly, appreciated the efforts of R V Rao, Nick Attam, and other members of the Telugu community for their dedication in making the event a success. “This event was not only a reminder of our roots but, in many ways, it felt like a celebration even better than back home,” remarked one elderly participant. The celebrations were so well-organised that they left a lasting impact on all who attended.
