MELBOURNE, 30 July, 2025: Buddhist leaders and influencers today caught-up with Premier Jacinta Allan and Multicultural Minister Ingrid Stitt, at the Parliament House, discussing issues that matter to the about 3 percent Buddhists in Victoria.
The group organised and led by Mr. Siddharth Maitrak, included Buddhist representatives from various temples, vihars, and many Members of Parliament.
The issues raised included the Buddhist community urging a state reception on Vesak day, that celebrates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death.
In her opening statement Premier Jacinta Allan welcoming those present said the state government was strengthening laws to protect multicultural communities so that they can protect their way of life. She also mentioned the upcoming review by George Lakakis, which she said will guide how the government will engage with multicultural communities.
Multicultural Minister Ingrid Stitt, said our diversity in Victoria is our great multicultural strength and that the wide community consultations by George Lekakis will lead to a situation to overcome any distress or anxiety generated in recent times.
Mr. Siddharth Maitrak, addressed the gathering on behalf of the Buddhist Community of Victoria, detailing the aspirations the community wished, including State reception on Vesak Day, support for Buddhist education, more state funding for Buddhist organisations, streamlining procession permits, greater representation in inter-faith bodies, naming a landmark in the name of Buddha, Vipassana meditation programs in correctional facilities,
He said, “We sincerely thank you and your government for your generous support in rebuilding the Bright Moon Buddhist Temple, in Springvale—a sacred place that fosters peace, harmony, and spiritual growth for countless devotees.
…a harmonious Victoria resonates deeply with Buddhist teachings—compassion, service, and unity. With your support, these initiatives will further enrich our society.”
Representatives from different bodies also gave specific suggestions for enhanced action by the State government to support Victoria’s Buddhist community. An email from the Premier’s office says, ” The issues raised both prior to and during the meeting will be carefully considered as part of our ongoing policy development process.”
