MELBOURNE, 9 October 2022: Gandhi Jayanti, Gandhi’s birthday this year was celebrated at the Australia India Community Centre (AICC) in the presence of distinguished academics and the community. The event kicked off with the garlanding of the Gandhi statue, followed by the welcome address by Dr. Santosh Kumar who outlined Gandhi’s journey and his nostalgic memories with an informative PowerPoint presentation, followed by the Indian Consulate representative’s speech.
This was followed by RMIT’s Prof. Bhargava’s presentation on Gandhi reborn, where he compared Gandhi’s thoughts with contemporary issues. Presentations also came from Margaret Hapworth, Initiatives for Change Australia, and Prof. Thomas Waber, La Trobe University. Cr. Susan Laukens, Mayor City of Knox also spoke. This was for the first time such an event was held at the AICC.
An exhibition of Gandhi’s historical photographs from Dr. Pareikh’s collection was a highlight of the event. A display of Ayur medicines was also organized by Dr. Santosh Yadav. A vote of thanks was given by Mr. Sury Prakash Soni, President Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria (FIAV). The program concluded with networking and lunch.
