MELBOURNE, 15 January, 2025: ‘Vishva Hindi Diwas’ (World Hindi Day) was today commemorated at the Indian Consulate, with a large number of Hindi lovers and the community from across Melbourne.
The day is held each year in Indian diplomatic missions and other places in many parts of the world, the original date of the day being 10 January. It started off in 1975, when it was decided to take the Hindi language to the world.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sushil Kumar, Consul General said he was happy Hindi was being taught in Melbourne and across Victoria. He also read out the message of Indian PM Modi for the occasion.
In had message, PM Modi on greeted the nation on the occasion of Hindi Diwas. He conveyed his best wishes to the people, marking the significance of the day.
“Many best wishes to all the countrymen on Hindi Diwas,” PM Modi shared, underscoring the importance of the language in fostering national unity.
The event at the Indian Consulate was also addressed by Mr. Subhash Sharma, who emphasised on the unity it creates being part of the cultural ethos of the speakers. He said the lack of stats about Hindi impaired its growth and urged Hindi lovers to promote the language.
The event also saw cultural items and a lively general knowledge quizzes for kids and adults. Appreciation certificates were also given for participants and prizes for quiz winners.
Hindi, one of the official languages of the Indian government along with English, is one of the 22 Scheduled Languages, according to the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Written in the Devanagari script, Hindi is spoken by around 600 million speakers worldwide, it is reported.
