MELBOURNE, 31 January, 2026: Facing difficult times in relationships is not uncommon—and South Asia, including India, is no exception. Wifed in India, by Harvinder Kehel Jain, is a contemporary work that examines Indian marriage and the emotional, psychological impact of patriarchal structures on educated, modern women navigating relationship challenges after marriage. The subject is complex and deeply rooted in India’s cultural ethos, cutting across communities.

At a book launch held at the Holiday Inn, Werribee, Harvinder described the book as being drawn “70 per cent” from her own experiences and the rest from women she has counselled through similar emotional and personal struggles. The Ballarat-based author called Wifed in India a “spiritual self-help book” for “all women lost in marriage.” The event drew a keen audience of both Indians and non-Indians, all listening attentively as Harvinder discussed her journey and the themes behind her work.

The novel follows Pari, an educated, self-reliant woman whose life changes course after marriage when she enters a household governed by unspoken rules, expectations, and gendered power structures. As she juggles marital duties, in‑law dynamics, motherhood, and personal ambition, Pari’s experiences reflect the quiet emotional struggles many Indian women face—where being a “good wife” often means absorbing conflict, managing others’ emotions, and gradually losing oneself. Through Pari’s story, Harvinder highlights how such conditioning can erode confidence, creativity, and career momentum, even within outwardly “successful” families.

At its core, Wifed in India is also a journey from patriarchy toward partnership. Framed through the lens of “relationship intelligence,” it encourages emotional literacy and conscious alignment over unconscious adjustment. Blending behavioural insights, Indian philosophical references, and practical tools, the book invites readers—especially women—to recognise harmful patterns, set boundaries, and reclaim dignity while fostering mutual respect rather than antagonism.

The post-launch Q&A and panel discussion delved into the emotional and psychological consequences of unequal relationships. Citing the Bhagavad Gita, Harvinder said, “My book is for everyone.” Her own family—present at the event—embodied her message of healing and renewal after personal upheaval. She believes her story, spanning life in both India and Australia, resonates universally.

Ultimately, Wifed in India invites readers to reflect on whether balance between tradition and individuality is possible. The author envisions Nirmukta—liberation—for women navigating modern societies still shadowed by regressive attitudes.
