Gurinder Chadha on ‘Christmas Karma’ & modern lessons from Dickens

Christmas Karma is a dazzling and vibrant musical retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic, starring Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory) and directed by Gurinder Chadha. Following its UK release on November 14, the Bollywood-inspired film arrives in Australia on November 27.

In an exclusive interview with Arvind Kalyana Krishnan for South Asia Times, Chadha shared insights on adapting Dickens for a contemporary, Christmas-centred musical. She discussed drawing from her own experiences and infusing authentic, relatable themes into the narrative, particularly the journey of its Scrooge-like protagonist. “When you adapt a beloved novel, it’s essential to honour the author’s intention and message. With Christmas Karma, I explored why my Scrooge loved money, capturing untold stories of Asian families and themes of redemption.”

Chadha expressed satisfaction with the film’s social commentary and musical blend: “The music elevated the story beyond my expectations. It’s bigger than I envisioned, and I’m super happy with it.” She highlighted how the film examines the pursuit of wealth, the impact on relationships, and the meaning of fulfilment, echoing Dickens’ timeless message: “What you leave behind is legacy, not riches. It’s about living fully.”

Praising lead actor Kunal Nayyar, Chadha described his preparation and commitment: “Kunal was hesitant at first, but his research and nuanced performance brought depth to the role. He really wanted to stretch beyond his usual screen persona.”

Chadha also gave an update on the awaited Bend It Like Beckham sequel, revealing that the project is progressing slowly to ensure it meets expectations. While fan speculation continues about the involvement of David Beckham and Keira Knightley, Chadha’s current focus remains on Christmas Karma.

Discussing Bollywood and Indian influences, Chadha spoke about working with stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt, and the film’s blend of British and Indian musical traditions. Christmas Karma features music from Gary Barlow, Boy George, Pixie Lott, and a special Bhangra Christmas number, alongside a Hindi rendition of George Michael’s ‘Last Christmas’ performed by Priyanka Chopra.

On the future of Bollywood actors leading Hollywood productions, Chadha said, “It’s definitely possible with the right script and star. I’ve made it work before with Aishwarya Rai; let’s see what the future holds.”
