Joyland, first Pakistani feature at the Cannes Film Festival 2022

MELBOURNE, 24 April 2022: Joyland, the first full-length Pakistani film has made it to the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival 2022. Written and directed by Saim Sadiq, is about a patriarchal family as they yearn for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line, while their youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious trans starlet. Their impossible love story begins to illuminate the entire family’s desire for a sexual rebellion.

This is Saim’s debut feature film.

The movie stars Sarwat Gilani, Sania Saeed, Salmaan Peerzada, Sana Jafri, Sohail Sameer, Alina Khan, Rasti Farooq, Ali Junejo among others.

Saim Sadiq writes on Instagram, “I am so excited to share the first image of JOYLAND and deeply humbled that the film is going to have its world premiere at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Virtual hugs for my cast and crew who deserve this moment and so much more.”

According to Variety, ” Film Constellation, a U.K- and France-based sales firm, has been appointed to handle international rights for “Joyland,” which is set to be the first Pakistan-made film in Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival.

Sales duties will be shared with WME Independent, which is representing North American rights.”
