‘National Museum of Indian Cinema’ traces the history of the world’s biggest film industry

Next time you go to Mumbai, do not forget to visit The National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) situated there. It is housed in two buildings – the New Museum Building and the 19th-century heritage building, Gulshan Mahal – both at the Films Division complex. The Museum showcases the history of India Cinema and has ample artifacts, digital elements including kiosks, interactive digital screens, information-based screen interfaces, etc.

 

Film properties and costumes, vintage equipment, posters, copies of important films, promotional leaflets, soundtracks, trailers, transparencies, old cinema magazines, statistics covering film making & distribution, etc. are displayed in a systematic manner depicting the history of Indian cinema in a chronological manner.

 

NMIC is a storehouse of information to the laymen, but also helps filmmakers, students, enthusiasts and critics to know and evaluate the development of Indian cinema which is more than 100 years old.

 

 

The NMIC is run by the Indian Government-funded Films Division of India (FDI), established in 1948. It took six years to complete the museum and is the only cinema museum in India. It opened in 2019.
