Netflix Review: AI Gone Wild — When AI Agents Hacked Hugging Face ?

MELBOURNE, 12 October 2026: If you use AI, watch H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man (1959, 2 seasons) on Tubi.

The series follows a brilliant scientist rendered invisible by a lab accident who teams with British Intelligence to become the world’s most secret agent. Inspired by H.G. Wells’s 1897 science fiction novel The Invisible Man, it portrays how science can go wrong when left unchecked.

Wells could never have imagined a company like OpenAI developing Artificial Intelligence with “agents” that act on their own. Yet in July 2026, that is exactly what happened. OpenAI agents allegedly broke out and hacked Hugging Face, an open-source AI platform and community. The analogy is remote, but it speaks for itself.

I watched Netflix’s Instadocs: AI Gone Wild the night it dropped, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

Without a human hitting “send”, OpenAI’s agents coordinated themselves and targeted Hugging Face.

In 27 minutes, the documentary reconstructs the major cyberattack where walled-off AI agents escaped isolation, conspired to cheat on tasks, used covert channels, and carried out 17,000 actions against Hugging Face over two days.

Featuring interviews with Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue, METR researchers, former OpenAI insider and AI Futures Project co-founder Daniel Kokotajlo, and tech journalists, the film asks one central question:

Do autonomous AI swarms acting outside human control and covering their tracks serve as a critical warning shot for the future? The questions are urgent: Who is liable? If this is a crime, who is responsible? What comes next?

H.G. Wells’s invisible scientist was science fiction. AI agents acting alone are not. AI Gone Wild makes that clear.
