Overview

Pyre is an Indian drama film directed by Vinod Kapri, known for its powerful, meditative exploration of love, loss, loneliness, and rural abandonment in the Himalayas. The film is bilingual, primarily in Hindi and Kumaoni, and features non-professional actors from the Uttarakhand region.

Plot/Themes

  • The story centers on Padam Singh (Padam Singh) and Tulsi (Heera Devi), an elderly couple living in a remote, nearly deserted village in Kumaon, Uttarakhand.

  • Most villagers, including their own son Hariya, have left for urban settlements, leaving the aging couple in isolation.

  • The narrative unfolds as they go through daily routines—tending goats, quarreling tenderly, helping each other, and clinging to distant hope. Their emotional anchor is the hope of seeing their son again after 28 years.

  • When a letter promising Hariya’s return arrives, it rekindles their spirits. However, the reality of migration and abandonment asserts itself, confronting them (and the audience) with the harsh solitude of disappearing Himalayan hamlets.

  • The plot takes existential turns, with the couple at times contemplating a final leap together, blending melancholy with warmth and subtle humor.

Artistic Approach

  • Vinod Kapri rooted the script in real stories he encountered in Munsyari, Uttarakhand. He was inspired by an elderly goat-herder and his wife, who exchanged goats for help when medical emergencies arose. The authenticity is heightened by casting real villagers instead of trained actors.

  • The film is praised for its slow, immersive pacing, organic dialogue, and the harmony between characters and the Himalayan landscape.

  • The soundtrack is composed by Mychael Danna and Amritha Vaz, with Gulzar contributing lyrics—adding significant cultural and emotional resonance.

Reception & Accolades

  • Pyre premiered at the 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Estonia), winning the PÖFF Audience Award.

  • It was the opening film at the 16th Bengaluru International Film Festival and received a Jury Special Mention in the Asian Cinema Competition.

  • The film earned multiple international awards, including:

    • Best Film Audience Award at the London and Birmingham Indian Film Festivals.

    • Grand Jury Award at the Stuttgart Indian Film Festival.

    • Additional audience and jury honors at festivals in Spain and the US.

  • Critics lauded its raw performances, minimalistic style, and emotional impact. The use of non-professional, elderly actors has been singled out for authenticity and poignancy.

  • The film strikes a chord with universal themes: aging, migration, the endurance of love, and the disappearing realities of Himalayan villages in contemporary India.
