ZEE5 Global Review: Siya – We want justice

‘We want Justice’ is the loud cry of ‘Siya’ which started streaming on 16 June, 2023 at ZEE5 Global. With inspiration from the Unnao and Hathras cases, Siya is a hard-hitting movie of a rape victim and her family facing hurdles to get justice. It speaks tons about the police and legal system in India. The path to justice is full of thorns but one can tread through it.

A village girl is kidnapped, held captive and raped by a group of youngsters including prominently connected  fellows. Getting a First Information Report (FIR) itself becomes a herculean task. It’s not easy to get an FIR done against well-connected political people. Once the FIR is done, the girls family is pressurised to dilute the case. The girl gives evidence in court. The main accused is freed. The cry of the victim’s family is – ‘Hum ladna chate hain – Hum nayaye chate hain’ (We want to fight, we want justice). The girl is determined to get justice through a family lawyer.

Things do not seem to work positively as the girls father is tortured and killed. The cops cremate the body. The fight for justice is on …

The movie is sad and gripping. The director is able to create the needed ambience – to create anger in the viewers mind about the rotten system. Nothing new, but needs to be told again and again. The recent wrestlers case of sexual harassment is a potent example.  We all know the facts. The world’s biggest democracy with the largest population cannot protect its women. The less said the better.

Director Manish Mundra (producer of Newton & Massan) in his debut film  excels, the newcomers give stellar performances.
