MELBOURNE, 13 October, 2024: The Indian and other communities here had a cultural feast today, as three Dhol drummers captivated crowds at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), amid the splash of arty ambience. People clapped in joy as Dhol music reverberated across the massive main foyer. Never before such Indian entertainment has engulfed Victoria. And, this was only one event among the spate of diverse activities at the NGV’s Indian Community Day.
The day-long Indian Community Day, had a Indian Fashion Discussion, hosted by Preeti Jabbal (SBS) with Abha Gupta, textile & fashion designer and Kudrat Makkar, Mastani. Both described their migrant journeys in Australia full of struggles and extraordinary. One’s dedication to work, they thought was essential, and off course being from India was equally important.
Pradip Sarkar’s DJ music, Kathak dance, folk dance from Rajasthan, drawing activity with Bushira Hasan, and a gallery tour of ‘Asia In Focus’ where one saw the ‘Tree Goddess Shalabhanjika’ (Karnataka) was all laid out for the day. Obviously, the Bollywood dance performance and the workshop was a big hit.
There were Indian type dining options laced with lots of tea and coffee.
It was six hours of free entertainment with thousands of Indians and other communities enjoying a family day.
