REVIEW ‘Blurr’: Psychological thriller …

MELBOURNE, 8 December 2022: Producer Taapsee Pannu takes us to beautiful Uttrakhand (Nanital Lake, Mall Road etc.) and heritage sites, in a remake of Spanish movie ‘Julia’s Eyes’ , 2010 ((Spanish: Los ojos de Julia). A psychological horror thriller, Taapsee Pannu (Gayatri/Gautami- twin sisters) and Gulshan Devaiah (Neel) grapple with the mystery behind Gayatri’s sister Gautami’s suicide, which is suspicious.  Gautami was blind and Gayatri is slowly loosing sight, but is determined to unravel the circumstances and someone who she suspects is behind her sister’s demise.

The first darkish half builds up the suspense as Gayatri keeps the pace trying to investigate the events that led to her sisters death, though the cops have given it up as a suicide. Hubby Neel is irritated struggling to cope with a situation he thinks is imagination.

The second half sees Gayatri getting some clues that reveal a lot. Her declining sight and another personal tragedy see the plot taking many twists and turns, thickening amid the haunting ambience of the hills and the perpetuator getting exposed.  Gayatri blindfolded (after her eyes operation) and subsequent scenes drag a bit. Till the climax, lots of blood-curdling scenes and eerie atmosphere will keep you glued to the screen. If this movie had gone to the Indian censors, I am sure, some of the graphic scenes would have been cut.

Director Ajay Bahl  keeps the gritty thriller dominated by protagonist Gayatri (Taapsee Pannu).  Taapsee and Gulshan give powerful performances.

Ajay Bahl says, “Blurr discovers angularities and depths of the human mind and the dark alleys it can traverse through. It throws you into the murky waters where human needs intermingle with extreme delusional anger. The narrative and the plot of the film gave me a lot of different aspects to explore while directing. With spectacular twists and character portrayal, Blurr will satiate your craving for a mind-bending thriller.”
