SYDNEY, 1 December 2021: The Story Adani environment group members today celebrated the first anniversary of SCG pitch invasion a year back by two protesters who ran unto the pitch during the first cricket test match between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground after running on the field carrying placards reading ‘No $ 1 BN Adani Loan’.
Over 20 people played a colourful and noisy game of cricket inside the Australia Square Tower, the Sydney Headquarters of the State Bank of India (SBI) Sydney office today, calling on SBI to rule the loan to Adani’s controversial Carmichael coal mine. The loan has not yet been ruled out, says a #StopAdani media release emailed to South Asia Times (SAT).
Josh Winestock, one of the protester who ran onto the pitch last year, said, “I’m proud that I ran onto the pitch that day. It resulted in unprecedented media coverage for #StopAdani, especially in India, which pushed SBI to put the $1 billion loan on the back burner. Now we need SBI to rule out this loan. That’s why we’re back again today. We won’t stop until SBI bin this loan.”
“Climate change is here. Coal is the biggest driver of climate change. At a time when the world should be moving away from coal, Adani is opening up a new coal mine. It’s a crime.”
“Adani’s coal mine is vulnerable. The truth is that Adani is in billions of crippling debt. Due to the #StopAdani movement, Adani’s coal mine is 8 years behind schedule, is currently a very small pit, and is billions of dollars in debt. The only thing covering this debt is Adani’s investors.”
