MANBIR SINGH interviewed International Booker Prize 2022 winner GEETANJLI SHREE author of ‘Ret Samadhi’ (Hindi), in a candid talk for Radiozine Kehte Sunte 89.3FM Sydney, listened across Australia on Facebook and YouTube globally every Thursday from 8-10 pm. The interview is in Hindi with a fair amount of English in it. Geetanjali’s conversation is a reflection of what a vernacular language can connect to convey life’s experiences. The International Booker Prize 2022 was for the English translation ‘Tomb of Sand’ by Daisy Rockwell. Geetanjali is an alumna of the Lady Sriram College (Delhi University) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

– The colonial situation is responsible for the translation of Hindi books translated into English getting noticed.
– Her re-induction into Hindi makes her think in Hindi and now makes her write in Hindi.
– The translated version of the book looks bigger, but actually, it is the same as Hindi but in a different layout.
– There are people who are attracted to art and culture despite being in a hurry to read.
– Borders are bridges. Our life is a political statement My writing is a celebration of life, it is not a political statement.
– Ma (80+) reinvents herself. It’s hard, but we always keep trying from inside.
– No partition history in the book. For North Indians, it is an experience, even if you were not part of it. It is still in our lives, it is part of my life.
– The Booker award or expectations generated by it have not diverted me.
– Balancing private and public life is a must. One cannot be separate from society.
– Booker is on the side now. It does not affect my new writing.
– In our own languages we have become poor. Because we are not using them. We have to use them to enhance them.
