Bangladesh interim head Fakhruddin Ahmed collapses

Dhaka:
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Fakhruddin Ahmed, has fainted while giving a speech near the capital, Dhaka.

“Fakhruddin Ahmed was addressing a tree plantation programme in Tangail when he lost consciousness and collapsed,” a government official told Reuters.

Mr Ahmed was taken to a local hospital, but his condition was not known.

Bangladesh has been sweltering in a recent heatwave, with temperatures as high as 39C leading to more than a dozen deaths from heatstroke.

Mr Ahmed took over as Bangladesh’s military-backed leader after the January elections were cancelled following months of political turmoil.
